(Stavanger, 17th of November, 2022) Today, Tampnet announced they are expanding their global service portfolio to include managed network services, SD-WAN and Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite connectivity. Photo: Starlink.
While historically basing its services mainly on its owned subsea fibre, microwave and LTE infrastructure, the emergence of LEO technologies, with their high-speed and low-latency properties, caught Tampnet’s interest from the outset. Taking into consideration the effects of weather and atmospheric conditions, Tampnet’s recent testing of the available LEO technologies has gone according to expectations, and coupled with its customers’ interest and fit with current services and architecture, Tampnet is now including LEO as one of their connectivity options. While taking an agnostic approach to technologies, to be able to offer the best solution for its customers at any given time, Tampnet is now adding Starlink’s business offering to its portfolio to better serve the demanding offshore energy and maritime market.
While Tampnet’s customers on offshore windfarms, production platforms, rigs and vessels now will have both a terrestrial and satellite connectivity option available, the provision of an effective form of dynamic switching between the alternative carriers becomes a natural next step. The SD-WAN technology is already a proven technology for leveraging various connectivity options for maximum network performance and availability. SD-WAN, in combination with Tampnet’s existing options for fibre connectivity, microwave, LTE and now LEO, will provide a unique offering the offshore industry has never seen before. Furthermore, the company will be able to respond to its customers’ requirements for connectivity to remote on-shore locations.
A unique network and service offering - connecting all offshore industries and people
With customers moving more towards managed services, Tampnet will combine its unique offering with a wider range of network services further “up the stack”. This has already been started through successful deployments of private LTE on several offshore sites, including local break out, connected field worker solutions and NB-IoT solutions. Based on a significant push and encouragement from its client base, Tampnet will expand on these services to also include fully managed network services, voice services, wireless LAN, crew internet, Push-to-Talk, sensor technologies and more.
Tampnet CEO, Elie Hanna, comments:
“We are extremely excited to add Starlink to our service portfolio. Starlink has been the early mover in the LEO space, and as they are now offering partner programmes and enterprise class services suitable for the maritime and offshore market, it was the right time for us to engage with them.
The decision to expand our service portfolio with both LEO and managed services is one that we have thought about long and hard. Our customers’ wish for Tampnet to do more for them, across a larger geographic footprint, has encouraged us to do so.
With our extended offering, we will also be able to expand our customer base in existing and new geographies. We are extremely well positioned to grow our company and attract the best possible talent to fill the key roles.
With our fully owned and operated infrastructure, consisting of 4200km of subsea fibre, 200+ microwave hops, 600,000 square km of offshore LTE coverage - and now LEO connectivity, we will provide a completely unique and robust connectivity offering to our global customers. Combined with private 4G/5G, SD-WAN and managed network services, we expect to grow significantly in our specialised market segments and any new offshore market segments over the next 5-year period. Furthermore, we are ensuring that these new offerings fit into our ESG strategy that ensures we actively contribute to a sustainable environment. Tampnet’s main contribution is through the enablement of our customer’s move towards remote operations and digitalization, as these are significant tools in the offshore industry’s efforts to reduce their carbon footprint. Our infrastructure and technologies, combined with reliable and robust services for over two decades, has positioned Tampnet as a key sustainability partner. “
Tampnet’s network is growing across the world
Tampnet has built large offshore LTE networks both in the North Sea and Gulf of Mexico. Recently, they have expanded their Americas footprint further, built an LTE network off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada, as well as Trinidad & Tobago. The total coverage is now approaching 600,000 square kilometres, and the network serves the offshore industry, offshore wind, public services, aviation services and individual mobile subscribers.
About Tampnet:
To enable roaming and the digital transformation, Tampnet installs and operates offshore 4G LTE coverage networks on offshore oil & gas platforms, offshore windfarms, service and commercial vessels.
Tampnet is dedicated to contributing to a carbon neutral future. Implementing various internal initiatives to support these goals, Tampnet is upgrading legacy infrastructure to more energy efficient 4G and 5G technology. Through their network, Tampnet enables offshore industry to digitalize operations for safer, more efficient facilities, with LTE, NB-IoT and private networks to support wireless sensors for condition monitoring, predictive maintenance, and remote operations. In creating new, high quality route alternatives, Tampnet is improving accessibility to new, carbon neutral data centres in the Nordics, designing the services to meet the capacity and latency demands of the future.
